Co-Occurring Disorders
(Substance Abuse and Mental Health) in Adolescents

Individuals with co-occurring disorders have at least one diagnosed mental disorder and one or more substance use disorders. An estimated 50% of adolescents who receive mental health services have a co-occurring substance use disorder and 75-80% of adolescents who enter substance abuse treatment have emotional disorders. It is not surprising that co-occurring disorders are associated with poor treatment and life outcomes and therefore require unique and integrated treatment approaches.
This workshop will help participants better understand mental disorders and substance use disorders that co-occur in adolescents and their implication on adolescent’s development. We will discuss the prevalence of co-occurring disorders, risk and protective factors, review the implications associated with assessment, and explore effective treatment approaches. Specific focus will be given to understanding the value of integrated treatment for co-occurring disorders.
