Trauma-Informed Care: Benefits & Challenges of Implementation in a Residential Setting Robert Davis, PsyD
For many years, the basic approach to bringing about change in the behavior of youth placed in residential treatment involved various forms of response-cost strategies. More specifically, motivating clients to change their behavior was attempted by instituting point-level systems that leveraged incentives for prosocial behaviors with various forms of punishment for any transgression or rule infraction. With the increasing acuity observed in children enrolled in residential centers, combined with a greater recognition of the prevalence of trauma in the lives of these youth, residential facilities have sought more effective and powerful change strategies which will not risk re-traumatizing youth via coercion and shame. This workshop will describe the efforts of the staff at Devereux Massachusetts to implement a trauma-informed approach to treatment based on an understanding of attachment and the therapeutic use of relationships in treatment.
Goals:
- Participants will learn about the national movement toward use of trauma-informed strategies.
- Participants will learn about the benefits of training interdisciplinary staff in an established curriculum for working with traumatized youth as well as additional approaches which can be integrated into many existing evidence-based models of treatment.
- Participants will learn ways to anticipate and overcome many of the institutional challenges of implementing trauma-informed treatment.
